The Sod House Museum is located north of Cleo Springs, Oklahoma, on State Highway 8 or from Cherokee, Oklahoma head south approximately 20 miles on highway 8. The Sod House Museum is owned and operated by the Oklahoma Historical Society and tours are available daily Tuesday through Saturday. Thousands of “soddies” dotted the landscape of the American Prairie in the latter half of the 1800s. In 1894, Marshal McCulley built his sod house after making the “run” of the opening of the Cherokee Strip on September 16, 1893. The McCulley family lived in this sod house until 1909. The sod house is the only remaining “soddie” open for public viewing. Visitors will find that it is protected by a covered structure and has been restored to its original state.
