Every September finds the crew at the Cherokee Strip Museum planning for its annual Land Run and Heritage Days Celebration. To commemorate the “Opening of the Cherokee Strip” by land run on September 16, 1893, the museum hosts a “old fashioned good time”! Home-made ice-cream, dutch oven cobbler, soap and butter making, broom making, antique appraisals, music and games are on tap each year for attendees to join in the fun. Of course, museum tours are available as well! Volunteer docents provide “one room schoolhouse” experiences for school children throughout the day at the one room school on the grounds. The barn is opened up for demonstrations while folks enjoy the fellowship and music. We invite you to join each September as we pay homage to our ancestors who braved the prairie to homestead in Woods County. The museum complex is located at the corner of Oklahoma Boulevard and 14th Street on the west side of Alva. Tours of the Depression Era Deco structure are available every afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 Tuesday through Saturday. Just give us a call for more information, or check the calendar of events to see the date and time for the next Land Run and Heritage Days celebration! The museum phone number is 580-327-2030.
