Hunting and Fishing

Woods County is your place to go for the absolute best in hunting and fishing in the Southern Plains! If Deer Season is your “annual vacation”, then you know about Woods County White Tails. Some of the largest deer taken have traditionally been found in Woods County. If pheasant, quail, or turkey are more your style, then look no further! Bird hunting is the best in the tall and short grass pastures and feed-grain fields of the region. Fishing for bass, catfish, crappy, and perch can be enjoyed at any number of area farm ponds or by taking just a short trek to the Great Salt Plains State Park. Be sure to check out the dam and the National Refuge area while you are there. Do you need a place to “camp” for the week-end? There are cabins at the Great Salt Plains State Park, Little Sahara State Park and Boiling Springs State Park, and R.V. parks in Alva, Waynoka and Freedom are easily located in each community. Call the local Chamber of Commerce office if you need assistance making arrangements to camp or park your rig. Perhaps your idea of wildlife adventures is a “tad calmer” than the active varieties of hunting and fishing! Don’t despair! Woods County is full of watchable wildlife opportunities and visitors should check out the Driving Tour Maps which have been thoughtfully put together by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife for the Great Plains Trail.
