Freedom Pump House

The Freedom Pump House, which is located on the east end of Main Street in downtown Freedom, was constructed in 1935 through the Public Works Administration program. The P.W.A. program was a New Deal program established by President Franklin Roosevelt to stimulate employment and construction across the country during the depths of the Depression. Oklahoma had suffered tremendous economic difficulty, not only as a result of the Great Depression, but also from the Dust Bowl which brought agricultural production to a stand-still in the Great Plains. The Town of Freedom was fortunate to garner the interest of Washington, D.C. politicians and secured financing for its first public water-works program. The Pump House is one the remaining P.W.A. structures in the region and today serves as “the town jail”! Consider the Pump House for your next “photo op”! Downtown Freedom’s “old west” storefronts and friendly atmosphere are sure to delight all the “cowpokes” in your life. If you are in need of some “cowboy culture”, then Freedom is just the place to visit!
