John D. Forsythe and S.A. Layton Structures

S.A. Layton, the architect of the Oklahoma State Capitol, also designed the Fine Arts Building on the NWOSU campus in Alva. Originally named Science Hall, the building is a classic example of Collegiate Gothic Style architecture. The structure has changed little during its 80 plus year history and today houses the university’s student services office and the Fine Arts Department.

John Duncan Forsythe, a renowned Oklahoma based architect during the first half of the 1900s, designed the Jesse Dunn classroom building and the Education buildings on campus. These structures were built during the Great Depression with Works Progress Adminstration funding. The buildings’ exteriors have changed little since their construction although annexes have been added to enlarge the available space. Forsythe designed the Marland Mansion in Ponca City for former Oklahoma Governor Marland.
